How to crosspost Mastodon to Twitter using IFTTT
  • If you're active on both Mastodon and Twitter, you may be looking for a way to crosspost your content from one platform to the other. The good news is, it's possible – with the help of IFTTT.

IFTTT stands for 'if this then that', and it's an online platform that allows you to trigger actions based on other actions. With IFTTT, you can create 'Applets' – simple rules which will cause one action (such as posting to Twitter) when another event is triggered (such as publishing a post on Mastodon).

Steps to create a Mastodon to Twitter crossposting Applet:

    1. Select the RSS Feed Trigger
    2. Enter your Mastodon RSS feed into the trigger
    3. Select Twitter as the Action
    4. Add all the relevant information from your toot to automatically post to Twitter.

How to find your Mastodon RSS Feed

To begin, you'll need the RSS feed URL for your Mastodon account. All you need to do is add ".rss" to the end of your public url. This could also work with any specific public Mastodon user you follow.

Enter your Mastodon RSS feed into the RSS Feed trigger

Once you have that, head over to IFTTT. You'll need to create an account if you don't already have one. Then click on 'Create', then '+this', and search for the RSS channel. Paste your Mastodon feed URL into the box and then click 'Create Trigger'.

    Create the Twitter Action

Now, you need to create the action that will happen when a post is published on Mastodon. Click 'that' and search for Twitter. You can then choose which action you want – such as post a tweet. In the box provided, add all of the content variables you can get from the feed. Create the action and then click 'Create Action'.
